I really like your emphasis on ...Intriguing stuff.

I really like your emphasis on the gender aspect of Pulp. This was one of the most worthwhile things about the early-mid-nineties generally I think, the fact that women were (almost) as omnipresent as men in alt-rock, as enthusiasts as well as participants. I think this in part accounts for the general mood of emancipation and gentle optimism you hear in many of the records of the period.

I was pretty young at the time too, but I remember girls at my school coming close to anorakdom about the indie bands of the day, which I guess hadn't happened up til that point, and has arguably not persisted in the years since (dubstep and chillwave - not to mention the blogosphere! - are all very male economies).

Anyway, as Wayne says, looking forward to more stuff.Alex Nivenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05525684766446729078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3586466115873226498.post-71071552881245869042011-05-25T19:09:21.397+01:002011-05-25T19:09:21.397+01:00Thanks for this. Wasn't aware that the sex/class tension in Pulp would resonate outside a certain area (or even generation). Sorted For E's an Wiz was a good one about hardcore partying just being more hard work - more social disillusion. He was very much an 80s performer in that sense, being older than Blur etc.

And yeah - Scott Walker. The big difference being Cocker was fascinated by women's inner lives. Walker's songs are often addressed to boys, no matter how romantic. But then a lot of these songwriters (the better ones) are playing characters, which a lot of listeners don't realise.

Looking forward to more.David K Waynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10756535951359716522noreply@blogger.com
